M(other) Tongues: Bodhild and Las Hermanas Iglesias

M(other) Tongues: Bodhild and Las Hermanas Iglesias features the work of Bodhild Brendryen Iglesias and her daughters Janelle and Lisa Iglesias. Born to Norwegian and Dominican immigrant parents, Janelle and Lisa create project-based work under the name “Las Hermanas Iglesias” (Spanish for “The Iglesias Sisters”).

The artists grew up in Queens, NY, and now reside on opposite coasts, maintaining independent and collaborative art practices. In addition to working together, they extend their process to the communities they convene, including other members of their family, and in particular, their Norwegian-born mother, Bodhild, an avid knitter.

The works in M(other) Tongues communicate a dialogic call and response between the family members, a back and forth visual conversation where abstract motifs are translated from one medium into another. The exhibition features an installation of hand-knit and woven works inspired by familial traditions—Bodhild’s mother’s rag rugs (matte), and the drawings and weavings of Anni Albers—who many consider the mother of modern textiles. Displayed on an architectural frame that can be seen from multiple angles, the intergenerational team privilege different visual perspectives, and highlight the process through which the works are made.

Interpretation of the exhibition was offered by Bodhild’s grandson, who leads visitors on an audio-guided tour.

The artists also participated in the National Nordic Museum’s biennial Nordic Knitting Conference in November 2021.
